Rajab and the
Sacred Months – Creating Tranquility for Worship
All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds. We praise Him, seek
His help and His forgiveness, and we seek refuge in Allah from the evil within
ourselves and the evil of our deeds. Whomsoever Allah guides, none can
misguide; and whomsoever He leaves astray, none can guide. Peace and blessings
be upon our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, his family, his
companions, and all who follow them with excellence until the Day of Judgment.
Among the wisdoms of Allah s,w,t, is that He chose certain times,
places, and acts and honored them above others. From these honored times
are the Sacred Months, and among them is the blessed month of Rajab.
Rajab and the Sacred Months
Allah Almighty says: “Indeed, the number of months with
Allah is twelve months in the decree of Allah since the day He created the
heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred. That is the correct religion,
so do not wrong yourselves during them.” (Surah At-Tawbah 9:36)
Rajab is one of the four sacred months. The other three come
consecutively: Dhul-Qa‘dah, Dhul-Hijjah, and Muharram. Rajab
stands alone between Jumada al-Thaniyah and Sha‘ban, as the Prophet ﷺ clarified in his Farewell Sermon.
These months were honored by Allah Himself. Just as Allah chose Makkah,
Madinah, and Bayt al-Maqdis above other lands, and chose the
Prophets above mankind, He also chose certain times to be sanctified.
Are Rewards and Sins Multiplied in Rajab? There is a
well-known scholarly discussion about whether good deeds are multiplied, and
sins are more severely punished during the sacred months. Some Companions, such
as Ibn ‘Abbas, and some of the Tabi‘een, like Qatadah, held this view based on
their ijtihad and tafsir. However, this is not a matter of consensus
among the scholars.
What is agreed upon is that Allah commanded us: “So do
not wrong yourselves during them.”
This means that we must be more conscious, more careful, and more
respectful of Allah’s limits during these sacred times.
The Wisdom Behind the Sacred Months: Peace and Safety
One of the greatest wisdoms behind the sacred months is the establishment
of peace and security. During these months, it was forbidden to initiate
fighting. This allowed people to travel safely for Hajj and ‘Umrah, to
worship Allah without fear for their lives, families, or property.
Worship cannot flourish in an environment of fear and chaos. Ibadah
goes hand in hand with peace and tranquility. The Shari‘ah came to
establish safety, mercy, and peace—not chaos.
Sanctity of the Haram and Ihram
Allah says: “O you who believe, do not violate the rites
of Allah or the sacred month… and cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do
not cooperate in sin and aggression.” (Surah Al-Ma’idah 5:2)
Islam transformed Makkah into a sanctuary of peace—not only for
people, but even for animals and trees. Hunting is prohibited in the Haram, and
even plants may not be cut.
Ibn ‘Abbas narrated that the Prophet ﷺ
said: “Allah has made Makkah a sanctuary. It was a sanctuary before
me and will remain a sanctuary after me… It is not allowed to
uproot its shrubs or to cut its trees…” (Bukhari)
This teaches us that tranquility is a prerequisite for sincere
worship.
A Deeper Reflection: Mental Ihram
During Hajj and ‘Umrah, hunting is prohibited so the heart and mind
can be fully devoted to Allah. But there is a lesson for us even outside of Ihram.
When we say Allahu Akbar in salah, we metaphorically enter a
state of ihram—yet many of us continue “hunting” with our minds: business,
messages, and planning. Rajab reminds us to clear our minds and hearts and
focus on Allah. Peace and security are an essential component of
worship: The concept of the sacred months is important for a deeper
reason, which is to create peace.
Secund Khutbah:
Security as a Foundation of Worship: Allah reminds
Quraysh: “Let them worship the Lord of this House, Who fed them
against hunger and made them safe from fear.” (Surah Quraysh)
Security came before worship. Without safety, true devotion is
difficult. This is the philosophy behind the sacred months: ring-fencing
time so that hearts can connect to Allah.
Rajab as Preparation for Ramadan: The Prophet ﷺ did not single out Rajab for special acts
of worship beyond what he did throughout the year. He never fasted all of
Rajab, but he consistently fasted Mondays and Thursdays and the three
white days (13th, 14th, 15th).
Sha‘ban, however, was different. ‘Aishah (رضي
الله عنها) said: “I never saw the Prophet ﷺ fast more in any month than in Sha‘ban.” (Ibn Majah)
Rajab is therefore a warm-up month, preparing the body and
soul for Ramadan.
The Role of Fasting and Taqwa: Allah says: “O you who believe,
fasting has been prescribed for you… so that you may attain taqwa.”
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:183)
Fasting sharpens taqwa. It disciplines the tongue, the eyes, and
the heart. But taqwa is not a badge. It is not measured by appearances
alone.
True taqwa is reflected in how we treat people. If someone prays
and fasts but cheats, oppresses, or mistreats others, that is not real taqwa.
Show me how a person deals with people, and I will show you their level of
taqwa.
Restoring the Sacred Calendar
In the Farewell Sermon, the Prophet ﷺ
said: “Time has returned to its original state as it was when Allah
created the heavens and the earth.”
The Arabs used to manipulate the calendar to suit their interests.
Islam restored time to its rightful order, reminding us that even time
belongs to Allah, and must not be corrupted for personal gain.
Conclusion
Rajab is not an isolated month. It is a sacred opportunity to slow
down, purify intentions, restore peace within ourselves, and prepare for the
greatest month of all—Ramadan.
May Allah allow us to honor what He has sanctified, to worship Him
in tranquility, and to reach Ramadan with hearts full of taqwa and sincerity.
Ameen.
Redžeb i
određena vremena, mjesta i djela i odabrao ih i dao im
prednost iznad drugih.
Redžeb i sveti mjeseci
A borite
Redžeb je jedan od četiri sveta mjeseca. Ostala
Allah odabrao Meku, Medinu i Bejtul-Makdis iznad drugih mjesta,
i odabrao Poslanike iznad čovječanstva (ostalih ljudi), On je također
dobra djela umnožavaju, a grijesi strože kažnjavaju tokom svetih mjeseci. Neki
Mudrost iza svetih mjeseci: Mir i sigurnost
mira i sigurnosti.
okruženju straha i haosa. Ibadet ide ruku pod ruku s mirom i tišinom.
Svetost harama i ihrama
Allah kaže: "O vjernici, ne kršite i ne omalovažavajte
Allahove odredbe hadža, ni sveti mjesec,... Jedni drugima pomažite u
dobročinstvu i čestitosti, a ne sudjelujte u grijehu i neprijateljstvu;."
(Sura El-Ma'ida 5:2)
ostat će utočište i poslije mene... Nije dozvoljeno iščupati njeno grmlje niti
sjeći njeno drveće..." (Buhari)
čak i izvan Ihrama.
Kada u namazu izgovorimo Allahu Akber,
metaforički ulazimo u stanje ihrama - ipak, mnogi od nas nastavljaju
"loviti" svojim umovima: poslovima, porukama i planiranjem itd. Redžeb
nas podsjeća da očistimo svoje umove i srca i fokusiramo se na Allaha dž,š. Mir
i tri bijela dana (13., 14. i 15.).
Međutim, ša'ban je bio drugačiji.
bilo kojem mjesecu nego u ša'banu." (Ibn Madže)
Stoga je redžeb mjesec zagrijavanja, pripremajući
tijelo i dušu za ramazan.
Uloga posta i taqwaluka: Allah dž,š, kaže: "O
(Sura
El-Bekara 2:183)
Post izoštrava taqwu. Disciplinira jezik, oči i
srce.
to nije prava taqwa.
vam pokazati njihov nivo taqwe.
Obnavljanje svetog kalendara
odgovarao njihovim interesima.
punim taqwe i iskrenosti.
Bože Jedini uslišaj, Amin.
